Demo Reels are an integral marketing tool for an actor. For those who see hundreds of Demo Reels in their daily lives, the difference between bringing the actor in or forgetting them entirely depends on how well your Demo Reel speaks for you. What kind of product are you presenting? Are your specific talents showcased? Are you memorable? Following these simple tips from Kevin E West, founder of The Actor’s Network, will prevent you from making mistakes which could cost you the role of a lifetime.
6 – BEST MATERIAL FIRST
You are an ACTOR, not a Magician, so don’t save your best trick for the end. Most decision makers do not have time or patience to watch your whole reel, masterpiece though it may be. Put your best foot forward, make a good impression, leave them wanting more.
5 – NO DEMO REEL IS BETTER THAN A BAD DEMO REEL
You are an ACTOR, not a filmmaker, so don’t try to do it all yourself. Hire professionals. A bad demo reel, like a bad kiss, is tough to forget. Network, pool your resources, and make sure you choose a DP who knows that YOU are the star of the reel, not them.
4 – DO NOT WRITE YOUR OWN MATERIAL
You are an ACTOR, not an award-winning writer. There are decades of material from award-winning writers, find something that fits you and make it yours. As Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from – it’s where you take them to.”
3 – PRESENT YOUR NAME & FACE AT THE SAME TIME
You are an ACTOR, not a Celebrity (yet). Put a face to the name, not a blank screen and an email. Don’t give viewers a reason to forget you!
2 – DO NOT MAKE SOMEONE ELSE THE STAR
You are an ACTOR, not a Co-Pilot. Begin with you, end with you. Ensure that your scenes maintain their information, but trim extraneous dialogue so you can keep the focus on YOU.
